Political change and the media. The Polish, Czech, Estonian and German publics after the transformations of the 1990s

Almost 35 years ago, Central and Eastern European political systems and even borders were redefined – but in different ways: While Germany became reunited, Poland experienced system change within existing borders, Czechoslovakia dissolved and split into two new states, and Estonia was founded as an independent state. Such system change always has huge effects on public communication and the media landscape – changes that may be hidden from a purely Western-German perspective.

To trace these changes and their effects on the media today, the event gathers media experts from the four countries: Halliki Harro-Loit (Estonia), Lenka Waschková Císařová (Czechia), Michał Głowacki (Poland) and Marcus Kreutler (Erich-Brost-Institute, Dortmund) currently work together in the Mediadelcom project to map chances and risks of changing media environments. The event will be moderated by Louisa von Essen.
